My Essential Hiking Gear Setup
There are only a few things you truly need to get started on a trail—but the right gear can completely transform your experience. It can make your hikes more comfortable, more enjoyable, safer, and more eco-friendly.
Below, I’ve linked the gear I personally rely on: The pieces I’ve tested, and become very particular about over time and would choose again without hesitation. Some of these (like finding the perfect hiking shoes) took me years to get right.
If I had to sum up what I look for, it comes down to this: thoughtfully designed gear that’s functional, lightweight, and eco-friendly—so it enhances your experience without weighing you down.

⭐️ Core Essentials
🥾 Versatile Hiking Shoes
Comfortable, durable, and quick-drying—my go-to for all terrains and conditions (except snow). This shoe is the only one I use for both running and hiking. Lightweight enough for running, but with an amazing grip for rugged trails. Plus, they dry super quickly if they get wet.
🎒 Ventilated Daypack
Lightweight with enough space for essentials. Crucial feature: A ventilated back panel keeps you noticeably cooler. The 24L version is enough for day hikes, but there's larger alternatives available too if you would like to size up.
🧅 Onion-Style Layers
Being able to shed layers during a hike is key. A light shirt as a base layer, a thin fleece jacket, plus another water- and windproof layer go a long way. Wear breathable, flexible pants to move comfortably. Below, I've linked three of my favorite brands for high-quality functional apparel.
🫧 Hydration
💧 Water Bladder
Hands-free hydration that keeps weight low and saves space.
Get My Lightweight Bladder🧊+☕︎ Insulated Flask
Nothing beats ice-cold water on a hot hike or a cozy warm tea in freezing weather, so an insulated bottle is essential for me. The one I’ve been using for years isn’t available in the U.S. (it’s a German brand called FLSK), but the option below is incredibly similar—both in design and performance.
My Pick For Enjoyable Drinks💦 Water Filters
I always carry a water filter in hot weather or on longer hikes:
• Sawyer Squeeze — best ultralight option
• Grayl GeoPress — best for maximum filtration
🌝 Comfort & Small Upgrades
🧦 Smartwool Socks
Breathable, temperature-regulating in cold AND warm weather, and great for avoiding blisters—one of the best simple upgrades.
Shop My Favorite Pair🥪 Reusable Snack & Sandwich Bags
Lightweight, compact, dishwasher-safe, and a simple way to cut down on single-use plastic. Perfect for lunch or snacks and keeping your pack organized.

🔎 Binoculars
A must for wildlife spotting—lightweight with great clarity for birds and distant animals.

I use two key setups: a mirrorless full-frame camera for high-quality images with incredible dynamic color and excellent low light performance with macro and wide-angle lenses, and a mirrorless APS-C-sensor camera combined with a lighter, more compact (& affordable) telephoto lens.
🔭 Lenses
My essential macro (stunning close-up details), wide-angle (landscapes & astrophotography), and telephoto (distance shots, essential for wildlife photography) options for different cameras.
🔎 Tripods
Lightweight, compact, yet sturdy—perfect for carrying on a hike.
